History of London

The name London is commonly thought to have come from the Latin name Londinium, as London was founded by the Romans during their reign over the land, around AD 43- although there is some slight evidence of pre-Roman settlement. The BBC History website, however, claims that the name Londinium is actually "Celtic, not Latin, and may originally have referred to a previous farmstead on the site"; the root is 'Lond' meaning 'wild' place. more...

Geography of London

Greater London covers an area of 609 square miles (1,579 km²). London used to be identified by its port on the Thames, which is a navigable river. The river had a major influence on the development of the city. London was founded on the north bank of the Thames and, for many centuries, there was only a single bridge, London Bridge. As a result, the main focus of the city was on the north side of the Thames. more...

Shopping in London

London is one of the world's great shopping cities, with over 30,000 retail outlets dotted across the capital (3,000 of which in Central London alone). Typically for London, particular areas of the city have their own shopping characters. In the west, The King's Road in Chelsea, SW1, has a long-standing reputation for fashion, although is now mainly high-street chains, while the Notting Hill area, once primarily antiques, is now also very popular for fashion boutiques, in particular along Westbourne Grove
and Ledbury Road, W11. more...

People of London

Londoners are a mixed bunch. On average, they are fairly private and quiet, even surly, but with no malice and a wicked sense of humour. Trying to get onto a packed bus will often involve quite a bit of cursing and pushing. Londoners don't take themselves or other people very seriously, as witnessed in the sport of "Blaine-baiting" which emerged briefly during the magician David Blaine's self-imposed incarceration at Tower Bridge during 2003.

Stay safe in London

Like many big cities, London has a variety of social problems, especially begging, drug abuse, theft (especially mobile phones), etc. London, however, manages to make do with a police force that doesn't need to carry guns, and is generally a safe place for the tourist to visit and walk around. In an emergency, telephone "999" (or "112"). Don't take illegal minicabs (see 'Getting Around' for details). Although the July 7 bombings happened, don't think this is a place where terrorism happens everyday. The security is tight and police are always supervising the tube stations like before.

Clothing in London

Most locals take fashion seriously. Londoners spend good money for clothing, always making sure all elements go together and paying close attention to color coordination. The common attire for businessmen is a two or three-piece suit. Corporate women are uniformly dressed in dark colored skirts and blazers. For street clothes, pack as you would for travel to the US -- a heavy coat for winter or lightweight jacket for summer months. Many upscale restaurants require jackets and ties.

Health Risks in London

No special vaccinations are needed to visit Britain. If you come from countries not part of the European Union, it is wise to obtain medical insurance, as there are no free medical care for tourists. EU citizens however, are entitled to free medical care from the National Health Service.

Currency of London

One British pound sterling is composed of 100 pence. Coins are minted in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 50 pence, as well as £1 and £2. Notes are circulated in £5, £10, £20, and £50. Rates for exchanging your currency into pounds vary by wide margins. Hotels aren't the best places to convert as their fees can be expensive. A bureau de change, such as Chequepoint, Lenlyn and Thomas Cook, is a better option. Major rail stations and tourist areas in central London have money exchange counters. Identification, such as a passport, is needed when exchanging travellers' cheques.
